Barbara Langhorne, B.A. A.T.C.M Certified Orff Teacher from the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto Burington Arts Person of the Year Award 2006 Barbara began studying piano at the age of 9. At 13 she won the '15 years and under' Gold Medal at the Canadian National Exhibition. At 14 she won the Gold Medal in the open-age Bach Competition sponsored by Western University, and was awarded a scholarship to Michigan State University's School of Music. At the age of 15, Barbara gave her first public concert, and obtained an associate degree from the Royal Conservatory of Musi of Toronto with First Class Honours. She Continued with10 years post-graduate studies at the Conservatory on scholarship with B. Hayunga Carmen of the Leschetizky School. During this time she also received her Batchelor of Arts Degree from McMaster University, and studied orchestral arranging. Barb taught piano, harmony, form counterpoint, and music history for many years, and received personal commendation from the principal of The Royal Conservatory for the outstanding achievements of her students. She was a Charter Member of The Orff Society of Canada when Carl Orff's method was first brought to this country and was chosen chosen by The Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto, the Univrsity of Toronto, and the Ontario Ministry of Education as the method best suited for the children of Ontario. Barbara received her Orff Teacher's Certification after studying under Doreen Hall (co-founder of the Orff dourse in Canada) and teachers from the Austrian Mother-school. She has also served as the Chairman of the President's Advisory Council on Children's Music at Humber College, and has given many music workshops for teachers of young children. |

MATT LANGHORNE Certified Orff Teacher from The Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto Matt began his studies on the piano at the age of 6, under the tutelage of his mother Barbara Langhorne. At the age of 10 he joined the Burlington Teen Tour Bands 'Peanut Band' and began studying military drums. At the age of 12 he studied with Roger Flock, of The Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra and gave his first professional performance on drum set at the age of 14. He auditioned and was accepted for pianio studies with Oscar Peterson in his home, and prepared for his college auditions on drums with Jack Brompton, after which he was accepted into the Mohawk College Music Program in 1983, where he furthered his drum studies for 3 years with David James, percussionist for the jazz band Manteca. While at Mohawk he also specialized in traditional and jazz harmony, counterpoint, music history, form and analysis, and continued his piano, vocal, and ensemble work. He underwent one year of extensive training in the Music Makers Method with Barbara and began to teach classes for the school in 1987. In 1993 Matt received his Orff Teachers Certification from the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto with First Class Honours under the direction of renowned child educator and author Lois Berkinshaw Fleming. While pursuing a degree at York University for Fine Arts as a music major, he received First Class Honours in Special Education Through Music for Children with Exceptionalities, which has led to great success in his teaching.
